John L. Frierson was born in 1930 in Johnson City, TN, where he grew up.  After serving two years on active duty in the US Air Force, John received degrees from Clemson (BS Horticulture 1951), Virginia Tech (MS Horticulture 1952), The University of South Carolina (PhD Biology 1960), and in 2000 he earned a Masters degree in History from the University of South Carolina.

During much of this time John was also active with his landscaping/hardscaping business, John L Frierson Landscaping, in Lexington, which he started in 1960.  Upon his retirement in 1995, John's son took over operation of the business.

John enjoys making things, primarily wooden, and he does truly beautiful work, making chests, cabinets, cane, blocks, boxes, and more, from all varieties of wood, of which he has an ample inventory right outside his shop.  His shop is large and very well-equipped, and John uses it to full advantage.  John remains a real history buff as well, and he enjoys collecting arrowheads, with a collection of more than 6000 pieces currently.  He also polishes stones and gems, dabbles in some jewelry making, and has a few other hobbies as well.  He is a man of many interests!

In September of 2011, John's new book "Memories of a Carolina Bird Hunter" was published.  This book is a handsome and interesting hardback, and only 550 copies were published.   It is available directly from John for $24.95 plus shipping.  If you have interest please see the "Contact" page for John's phone number or address - he prefers written orders but will of course entertain ordering via phone.
